What does it cost to install a home EV charger in South Africa?

There is no single price for a home charger install — it depends on your car, your DB board and how far the cable has to run. Here is what actually moves the number.

It's the first question almost everyone asks us — and the honest answer is it depends. A home EV charger installation isn't a single product with a sticker price; it's a small electrical project, and the cost is driven by your home, your car and where the charger needs to go. The good news: once you know what to look at, it's easy to get an accurate, no-surprises quote.

What actually drives the cost

Five things move the number more than anything else:

  • The charger itself. A simple 7.4 kW wall box costs less than a smart, app-connected or load-managed unit. We install all brands, so you can match the charger to your budget and your car.
  • Single- vs three-phase. Most homes are single-phase (good for up to 7.4 kW). Three-phase supply unlocks 11–22 kW but the wiring is a bit more involved.
  • Cable run. The distance from your distribution board (DB) to the charging spot is the single biggest variable. A charger on the wall next to the board is quick; one across the property needs more cable, trunking and labour.
  • Your DB board. If the board has a free way and spare capacity, great. If it's full or needs a dedicated breaker and surge/earth-leakage protection, that's added.
  • Mounting & extras. Surface vs flush cabling, weatherproofing for an outdoor wall, and optional load management so the charger never trips your main breaker.
Tip:

The biggest money-saver

Choosing a charging position close to your DB board keeps the cable run short — which is usually the cheapest way to bring the total down. We help you pick the spot during the free assessment.

What you get for the price

A proper installation is more than bolting a box to a wall. It includes a dedicated circuit sized for the charger, the right earth-leakage and surge protection, tidy cable management, and testing before handover. Done right, it just works — quietly, every night.

A note on Certificates of Compliance

A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) covers the electrical installation and is sometimes required by your municipality or when you sell. It is a separate, optional item — ask us if you need one and we will quote it transparently rather than bundling hidden costs.

How to get an accurate quote

The fastest path to a real number is a quick look at your setup. Tell us your car, send a photo of your DB board and the spot you'd like the charger, and we can give you a clear, itemised quote — or book a free 20-minute video assessment and we'll walk through it with you.
